The experience

From frozen lakes to the summits.

Around Carcross, the trails cross the boreal forest, run along frozen lakes and climb toward the ridges. A snowmobile takes you far, where few travellers venture.

Our expert expedition guides introduce you before departure, then choose the route according to the snow, the weather and your comfort. Alone or two-up, you ride your own machine.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions.

Do I need to have ridden a snowmobile before?

No. We introduce you before departure, and the route adapts to your comfort.

Can two people ride one snowmobile?

Yes, a driver and a passenger. It is a good option for couples or families.

Snowmobile or dog sled?

The sled is about silence and the bond with the dogs. The snowmobile takes you further. Many of our travellers do both.

Where is Carcross?

In the Yukon, the territory of Canada's far northwest, at the gates of Alaska. Carcross lies about 30 minutes from Whitehorse, between Bennett Lake and Nares Lake, at the foot of Montana Mountain. Its sand dunes, nicknamed "the smallest desert in the world", contrast with the turquoise waters and snowy peaks. The history of the Gold Rush lives on in the period train station and the White Pass railway line, and the culture of the Carcross/Tagish First Nation remains vibrant. The village has 431 inhabitants and sits at 659 m (60°09′58″ N · 134°42′13″ W).

How should I dress for snowmobiling?

Speed creates a wind that can double the effect of the cold. The three-layer principle: a base layer in merino wool or synthetic (never cotton), an insulating layer in fleece or down, then a windproof parka. Mittens rather than gloves, and cold-weather boots one size up. Add a balaclava or face protection.

What licence do I need to drive?

A driving licence is required for each driver. Children can join from age 5, accompanied by an adult.

Do I need specific insurance?

Yes. Check that it covers the planned activity, medical evacuation and repatriation, as well as cancellation or delays due to weather. Keep the assistance number on paper and on your phone.

Until this registration is complete, Terre Nord takes no bookings and collects no payments: enquiries lead to a conversation and a proposal with no commitment.
